Lecturer: Operations Research
(Five-year Term)

The Department of Industrial Engineering focuses on the following areas of research to improve global competitiveness: Operations Research, Machine Learning, and Data Science in Industrial Engineering; Operations Management and Logistics; Advanced Manufacturing; and Engineering and Technology Management.

The successful candidate will be expected to keep abreast of the latest academic content and practical applications in the areas where they are deployed to ensure relevance and sustainability of the department.

This is a fixed-term appointment, tailored for a prospective PhD student, (i.e. who has completed or is in the process of completing a suitable Master’s degree, and wishes to pursue a PhD, or who has already started a PhD) in Operations Research and the interface to Machine Learning and Data Analytics. The maximum term is five years, but this can be tailored to shorter periods to suit individual requirements. The incumbent will report to a senior researcher in the above specialisation area, assist with research and lecturing duties, and thereby contribute towards expanding the research footprint of Operations Research in Industrial Engineering.

Duties:

- Assistance with the academic guidance and management of a specific research group;
- Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching;
- Supervising postgraduate students;
- Conducting research for and technology transfer to the industry;
- Completing the PhD during the term of the position, to expand the academic footprint of the Operations Research focus group.

Requirements:

- A Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering;
- A Master’s degree (completed or planned for completion by the end of the 2018 academic year) in Industrial Engineering with a focus on the interface between Operations Research, Data Analytics and Machine Learning;
- An excellent academic record;
- The academic ability to present a wide range of Operations Research and Data Analytics modules in the Industrial Engineering undergraduate and postgraduate curricula;
- Past exposure to research in the above area of specialisation;
- Excellent computer programming skills;
- Affiliation and active participation in an Operations Research scholarly society;
- Good verbal and written communication skills;
- A desire and commitment to proceed with a PhD, focusing on the above area of specialisation.

Recommendations:

- Substantial progress towards the attainment of a PhD on the interface between Operations Research, Data Analytics and Machine Learning;
- A proven record of research potential, including previous thesis work and other publications;
- The ability to facilitate and support existing research activities within the above area of specialisation;
- The ability to supervise postgraduate students on topics within the above area of specialisation;
- Experience in tutoring or teaching Operations Research and/or Data Analytics modules at undergraduate or postgraduate levels;
- Good organisational skills;
- Fluency in Afrikaans and English.
