nGAP Lecturer/Junior Lecturer

A vacancy exists in a strong teaching and research team in Fire Safety Engineering in an environment with a large number of students. The candidate must follow a career in this field of study. The position is part of the nGAP initiative of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). The position is aimed to appoint a young (under the age of 40 years), Black African, Coloured, Indian, Asian or female South African citizen. During the first three years of appointment, the incumbent will typically spend four days per week on PhD study and one day per week on academic and/or technical support in the Department. The support work will not necessarily be related to the PhD. The incumbent can choose a supervisor, in consultation with the Department’s management, from the professors of this Department.

The incumbent will be appointed in accordance with the regulations of the new Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) of the DHET, and will be required to complete a PhD. The position comes with substantial support from the DHET.

The appointment is also subject to the conditions as set by the DHET and must be read in conjunction with the nGAP requirements of the DHET (see www.dhet.gov.za/SSAUF).

Duties:

• Teaching and curriculum development in Fire Safety Engineering;
• Postgraduate study guidance and research in Fire Safety Engineering;
• Academic and departmental administration.


Requirements:

Junior Lecturer:
• A Master's degree in Civil, Mechanical/Mechatronic, Electrical/Electronic, or Chemical/Process Engineering, preferably with a focus on a topic related to fire safety engineering, in which 70% or more was achieved;
• A good academic study record in Engineering;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
• The candidate must qualify to register for a PhD in Fire Safety Engineering at the latest in 2022 and graduate within four years.
Lecturer:
• A doctorate in Engineering with a focus on a field associated with Fire Safety Engineering;
• A good academic study record in Engineering;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.


Recommendations:
Junior Lecturer:
• Enrolled for a PhD degree;
• The ability to work effectively in a multilingual environment.
Junior Lecturer/Lecturer:
• A background in thermodynamics and/or structural design and/or engineering design and/or human behaviour and/or fire modelling and/or safety related to fire safety engineering, and a willingness to teach in these strategic subject fields;
• Experience in and the ability to deliver presentations to large audiences.

Commencement of duties: 1 January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter
