Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer: Electromagnetics and Antennas (Permanent post)

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University offers leading educational and research programmes in the fields of electromagnetics, antennas and high-frequency systems and technology. A Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor position is available in the Department in these fields. The Department is therefore looking for an excellent candidate to fill this position. The Department has well-established research laboratories as well as teaching and engineering infrastructures in these fields.

Duties:

• Teaching and administration of general undergraduate modules and of specialised undergraduate and postgraduate modules in electronics, antennas, electromagnetics and high-frequency techniques;
• Supervising final year projects and postgraduate (Masters and PhD) students in the fields of electromagnetics, antennas and/or microwave engineering;
• Performing basic and/or applied research focussed on relevant research areas within the fields of electromagnetics, antennas and/or microwave engineering;
• Collaborating with existing research partners in and outside of the Department, and building new networks with other universities, industry and government organisations in order to promote research and development programmes in the fields of electromagnetics, antennas and/or microwave engineering at Stellenbosch University;
• Playing a senior role in the High-Frequency research group, including the development of national and international funding sources, and grant applications;
• Performing supporting, administrative and representative roles within and outside the Department.

Requirements:
• An applicable Bachelor’s degree (such as BEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as recognised by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer;
• A PhD qualification in the field of electromagnetics, antennas and/or microwave engineering from a recognised academic university;
• A solid knowledge of and experience in the fields of electromagnetics, antennas and/or microwave engineering;
• The ability to communicate clearly in at least English and to teach courses and modules as described under duties above;
• An excellent academic profile, as shown through:
o A proven record of excellence in teaching in BEng or MEng modules, in the fields of electromagnetics, antennas and/or microwave engineering;
o A proven record of postgraduate supervision in MEng or PhD programmes, in the fields of electromagnetics, antennas and/or microwave engineering;
o A proven and relevant publication record in the fields of electromagnetics, antennas and/or microwave engineering in international peer-reviewed journals, as well as conference proceedings;

OR

• A proven track record of at least ten years in industry, working in the field of system or device design, in the fields of electromagnetics, antennas and/or microwave electronics. The relevance of the experience, and especially the advanced level should be shown through:
o Publications in peer-reviewed local or international journals;
o A high level of technical expertise in at least one of the fields above;
o Recent advanced technology projects and designs where the candidate was the lead designer;
o Innovation in designs introduced by the candidate;
o Project and financial management of technically advanced industrial projects.

Recommendations:
• Appropriate industry experience;
• Examples of innovative engineering design;
• Registration as a Professional Engineer;
• An NRF rating as researcher;
• Ability to function in a multidisciplinary environment;
• A proven track record to mobilise external funding for research;
• Candidate from the designated groups.
