Department of Mathematical Science: Computer Science Division

Lecturer/Junior Lecturer

The Mathematical Sciences Department is responsible for teaching and research in mathematics, applied mathematics and computer science at Stellenbosch University. The Computer Science Division is keen to strengthen its research in existing active research groups, in particular, machine learning, artificial intelligence, automata theory and natural language processing, software engineering, and program analysis. The position is part of the nGAP initiative of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and comes with substantial support from the DHET (http://www.dhet.gov.za/ssauf/ngap.html). Additionally, the Faculty of Science offers a generous start-up package and research funds for the first five years.

Duties:

- Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate Computer Science modules;
- Research and publication in any relevant area of Computer Science;
- Advising and supervising postgraduate students;
- Administrative roles on a rotational basis.

Requirements:

For appointment at the level of Lecturer:
- PhD in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, or Statistics with a thesis topic in Computer Science or Data Science;
OR
MSc in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, or Statistics with a thesis topic in Computer Science or Data Science and a proof of registration for a PhD in Computer Science with significant progress towards completion;
- Existing academic publication record in recognised journals or conference proceedings;
- Teaching experience in Computer Science tertiary level (e.g., teaching assistance or graduate student supervision);
- Demonstrable exceptional communication skills.

Recommendations:

- A growing research profile in Computer Science or Data Science.
- Research focus in Theoretical Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Programming Languages, Computer Networking, Databases, or Computer Graphics.

For appointment at the level of Junior Lecturer:
- MSc in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, or Statistics with a thesis topic in Computer Science or Data Science;
- Research proposal (3-5 pages) for postgraduate study at the doctoral level in the research areas of the Division;
- Demonstrable exceptional communication skills.
Recommendations:
- Research experience;
- Research focus in Theoretical Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Programming Languages, Computer Networking, Databases, or Computer Graphics;
- Existing academic publication record in recognised journals or conference proceedings;
- Teaching experience in Computer Science tertiary level (e.g., teaching assistance or graduate student supervision).

Commencement of duties: 1 March 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter
